    The Service Engineer provides service engineering and scientific/technical assistance to customers in the calibration, maintenance and repair of highly complex measuring and laboratory instruments (ISO 17025 standards may apply). This position will be based out of our new Vernon Hills, IL office, and will require occasional travel to our Ashland, VA US headquarters for periodic training. 

    Responsibilities & Qualifications

    • Utilizes scientific knowledge and training to provide engineering and technical support to customers via telephone and/or email on the use, operation, maintenance and specifications of complex instruments.
    • Analyzes, investigates, interprets, and diagnoses scientific instrumentation to deduce and ascertain whether such instrumentation is functioning properly. Based on analyses, advises customer accordingly.
    • Analyzes and evaluates malfunctioning instruments, and prepares estimates for the cost of repair.
    • Based on information deduced from analysis, testing and evaluation of instruments, formulates proper methodologies to repair malfunctioning instruments. Conducts technical repairs of instruments using common and specialized tools and procedures.
    • Performs factory calibrations and preventive maintenance of instruments according to engineering instructions, technical manuals and other established procedures, while using scientific and independent judgment as to what procedures to use.
    • Self identifies and forwards sales opportunities to Technical Sales Representatives when instruments need to be replaced.
    • Maintains proper and correct records of parts and supplies used and related business expenses.
    • Calibrates instruments in accordance with prescribed ISO/IEC 17025 specifications, calculates measurement uncertainty, and provides clients with Anton Paar calibration certificates.
    • Maintain knowledge of company products and services.
    • Must maintain a current and valid driver’s license and passport.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering, physics or related field is required.
    • Attends mandatory in-house technical training courses each year to stay current on new developments in the field. Certificates are awarded upon satisfactory completion of each program.
    • Knowledge of the theoretical and practical application of engineering science and technology.
    • Skill in using electronic schematics, electronic testing equipment and repair tools.
    • Analytical problem solving skills.
    • Good verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Strong customer service skills.
